Residence
The earliest schemes considered the possibility of using poles for the long support at the west end but such a solution always ended up with a terrible multiplicity of braces that became so complicated visually as to be unacceptable. Further, the local laws were such that any chimney must be carried in masonry to the ground and we thus went ahead with a concrete bent as the main structure on the west side. The foundation is a grade beam and pier foundation with a built-in jacking system.
